The Greenbrier Becomes 2nd Casino To Offer West Virginia Sports Betting
Just as the 2018 NFL season has recently kicked off, so has legal West Virginia sports betting. Just three weeks into the regular NFL schedule, a second WV casino has started to accept bets on sports.
Last week, the FanDuel Sportsbook at the Greenbrier Resort and Casino launched just in time for Week 2 of the 2018 NFL season. The Greenbrier, owned by WV Governor Jim Justice, is a membership-only private casino located in White Sulphur Springs.
“We are honored to be chosen to provide sports wagering services at The Greenbrier, an iconic resort in the U.S.,” stated FanDuel CEO Matt King. “As we work towards building out a top sports betting product for the upcoming NFL season, we look forward to bringing West Virginia residents, sports fans, and visitors to The Greenbrier the best interactive sports experience on the market.”
Mobile And Online Betting Soon To Come
The “interactive” capabilities of the FanDuel Sportsbook will be crucial to its success, as The Greenbrier follows a somewhat unique business model.
The Casino Club at the Greenbrier is America’s only private casino, which means that the sportsbook will hold the same level of exclusivity. In order to gain access, bettors must purchase an annual membership to the golf club which starts at $1,590, own a home in The Greenbrier Sporting Club, or be a guest at the hotel.
With limited onsite wagering to take place at the new sportsbook, mobile and online platforms will likely generate more traffic. Though not available just yet, a mobile platform is on its way.
The West Virginia State Lottery approved regulations that authorize each licensed sports betting operator to contract with up to three online licensees. In the case of FanDuel, this is familiar territory as the bookmaker launched its mobile app for New Jersey sports betting earlier this month.
While WV will utilize geofencing technology similar to Nevada and Mississippi, the state differs in that it allows bettors to register remotely. The other two states both require patrons to register for mobile sportsbooks in-person.
More West Virginia Sportsbooks To Come
The first casino to usher in sports betting in West Virginia was the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races on August 30th. Right in line with the start of college football, a total of about $340,000 was wagered on the first Saturday of the season.
With five casinos eligible to apply for sports betting licensure, it is only a matter of time before additional sportsbooks begin to open.
The Mardi Gras Casino in Charleston and Wheeling Island Casino in Wheeling have already been approved by the commission to offer sports betting, though no sportsbook partner has been announced.
The Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort is the fifth and final eligible licensee, though owner Eldorado Resorts has yet to submit an application.
In due time, residents and tourists may have five different local sportsbooks that they can visit to bet on the West Virginia Mountaineers and other popular teams.
